The Anti-TBR | Book Tag

Talking about books that we don’t like or have no intention of reading… It’s one of a book bloggers (or even a book lovers) favourite things to do. We go on so much about all of the books that we love, our OTP characters, and the covers that we can’t get enough of. But once in a while, the salt comes out, and we just can’t help but have a good rant.

I’ve seen this tag being thrown around the blogosphere quite a lot lately, and couldn’t help but get involved myself. I wasn’t tagged to do this, but I did see it on Kristin’s blog over at Kristin Kraves Books.

This book tag was created by Nicole at @nicoleandherbooks, so definitely go and check out those two, as their content is amazing.

a popular book everyone loves but you have no interest in reading

Midnight Sun by Stephanie Meyer. What is the point of this book. We don’t need another Twilight novel. I first read these when I was fifteen and I thought that they were Gods gift. But now, I’m 25 and I can safely say that I will NEVER EVER read Midnight Sun, which is Twilight from Edward’s perspective. Personally, I think Stephanie Meyer should just leave that series alone now…

a classic book/author you don’t have an interest in reading

As an English student who had to read classic literature all throughout secondary school, in my English degree, and also in my Masters, I’ve read my fair share of classic literature. However, there are some that I can say with 100% certainty that I will never read, and those are War and Peace, Anna KareninaLes Misérables, and Crime and Punishment.

Why would I want to read books that are WAY too long, books that are probably going to have 3 pages talking about a cloud, when I could read some amazing contemporary fiction.

an author whose books you have no interest in reading

I don’t know. I try not to write off authors if I haven’t read any of their work. I guess Stephanie Meyer would be on that list just because I always associate her work with teenager me, and I’m 10 years older now. I also think Colleen Hoover, as romance novels aren’t really for me, and I’ve just heard a lot of negative things about her books. But I guess I can’t really knock it until I’ve tried it.

a problematic author whose books you have no interest in reading

(I’m not even going to include pictures cos they don’t deserve it)

As time goes on, more and more light is being shed on authors who have said/done questionable things. For me, the main ones that I’ve heard about are J.K. Rowling and her thoughts on transphobic people. You can check out the rundown on what happened here, and please – if you can – donate to the Homeless Black Trans cause.

A couple more authors that I’ll be staying away from will be James Dashner, Jay Asher, Rainbow Rowell, Brandon Sanderson. For the reasons why these authors are problematic, please check out Amber’s lists over on her website: The Literary Phoenix, where she details why these authors are problematic.

an author you have read a couple of books from and decided their books are not for you

Mmmmmm… I’ve been quite lucky when it comes to not finding the right authors. I tend to go for a books I know that will be a win for. I guess the authors that I decide not to read any more are those from my teenage years such as Meg Cabot, John Green, Stephanie Meyer, Ally Condie… But, I think that’s just because I will always associate their work with the books that I read when I was fifteen/sixteen.

a genre you have no interest in OR genre you tried and couldn’t get into

Like authors, I try not to ignore a genre on purpose. Of course there are genres that I’m less inclined to read like historical fiction (mainly war books), but I wouldn’t NOT read it, because I sometimes find a hidden gem among the genre. If I had to pick a genre though, I’d probably go for erotica. Not my cup of tea…

a book you bought but will never read OR a library book you borrowed but returned unread

I bought The Girls by Emma Cline and never read it… There was also Isla and the Happily Ever After by Stephanie Perkins. Those are the ones that I can remember off the top of my head. I’m sure there are more…

a series you have no interest in reading OR a series you started but have dnf’d

The Mistborn series… Even before I realised Brandon Sanderson was problematic, there was no way I was going to even bother reading those books. There was also the Vampire Diaries series. I think I got to the 10th book, and I just got so bloody bored and I found out that there were a few more books, and I was just like. No. I can’t do it.

a new release you have no interest in reading

The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes by Susanne Collins. The Hunger Games trilogy should have been left as it was, in my opinion. I just don’t think that there was a need to write a prequel… I can’t really think of any more other than from the authors I’ve previously mentioned.

So of course, if you loved any of these books/authors, I’m sorry if I offend you, they just aren’t for me. Everyone’s allowed their own opinions and these are mine. Don’t forget to check out the links that I’ve included for donations/petitions, and also Amber’s website where you can see the list of problematic authors and WHY they are problematic.

Until next time…
