Illumicrate Unboxing | May 2020
Who doesn’t love a good book subscription box, eh? You get loads of bookish goodies, and when it arrives every month, it feels like your birthday/Christmas and it’s amazing. It’s like a present from you to you.
Anyway, let’s get into the unboxing!
The theme for this month was ‘Monstrous’.
As usual with sub boxes, there is a spoiler card inside that tells you the theme for the month and also what you can find inside the box, but I never read this until I have seen every single item, as I don’t want to spoiled!
I love hot chocolate so much, especially when it’s done perfectly. As soon as I opened this tin, I could just smell it and oh my god, it was gorgeous.
The next item that I saw was this set of post-it notes that were designed by Caroline Dougherty (thousandwrecks) and is inspired by The Witcher and his bard.

I love stickers so much, especially ones inspired by fantasy. I was looking for some more to add to my laptop and now I have some!

Who doesn’t love book sleeves? They come in so handy whenever I’m travelling anywhere. I always used them when I was going to university, and I take loads of them with me when I go to book conventions like YALC so I can store all my books safely without them getting damaged on the way back home.
This book sleeve was designed by Pauhami and is inspired by Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.
This may be one of the most beautiful things that I’ve ever laid eyes upon. Did I need a phone holder? No, not really. But will I treasure this will all my heart? YES. Why? Because I am an absolute Studio Ghibli stan and I love everything about the company. As soon as I saw this Howl’s Moving Castle wooden phone holder, I literally gasped out loud.
I love it so much!
And HERE IT IS! The book of the month was The Girl and the Stars by Mark Lawrence. This edition is signed by the author, and also has exclusive spray painted edges. Also included was a letter from the author.
I actually haven’t heard much about this book, but I know that a lot of people rave about Mark Lawrence’s writing and how beautiful his world building is, so I’m excited to jump into it.
On Abeth the vastness of the ice holds no room for individuals. Survival together is barely possible. No one survives alone.
To resist the cold, to endure the months of night when even the air itself begins to freeze, requires a special breed. Variation is dangerous, difference is fatal. And Yaz is not the same.
Yaz is torn from the only life she’s ever known, away from her family, from the boy she thought she would spend her days with, and has to carve out a new path for herself in a world whose existence she never suspected. A world full of difference and mystery and danger.
Yaz learns that Abeth is older and stranger than she had ever imagined. She learns that her weaknesses are another kind of strength. And she learns to challenge the cruel arithmetic of survival that has always governed her people.
Only when it’s darkest you can see the stars.
Thank you to Illumicrate for a box filled to the brim of bookish goodness. I can’t wait for next months box which is themed ‘In the Shadows’ and has exclusive sprayed edges, an exclusive cover – and also an exclusive HIDDEN cover underneath the dust jacket – and finally, there will be beautifully designed end papers.
I can tell just from the design of the theme artwork what next months book is going to be, and I AM SO EXCITED! I have been waiting for this book for so long.
Believe me guys, you do not want to miss out!
