First Impression Friday | 16/11/18
If you’re not aware of what First Impression Friday is, it was created by Joe at JW Martin – Storeys of Stories where, every Friday, he talks about his first impressions of his current read. I actually think that I’m going to do this bi-weekly because, at the moment, I don’t think that I’m going to be reading books that quick due to university.
Title: The Crystal World
Author: J.G. Ballard
Publication Date: 2nd April 1966
Publisher: Jonathan Cape
Pages: 221
Genre: Science Fiction
Series: N/A
The West African jungle is turning into crystal. Everywhere plants, trees and animals are changing and men are fleeing except some foolhardy types who remain to drift, dazzled, through this spectacular dreamworld.
The Crystal World is a book that I have to read for my science fiction course at my university, and whilst I was excited to read something by J.G. Ballard, this book isn’t living up to the hype of what surrounds Ballard’s writing.
The premise is a very interesting one though. There is a ‘virus’ (?) that is making everything crystallise, even humans. So if you get caught in the crystallisation for too long, you basically turn into crystals and die. I’m at the 30% mark at the moment, and even though it’s not living up to my expectations of what a Ballard novel would be, I’m still enjoying it to a certain extent.
I’ll be back next week (or in 2 weeks…) to share my first impressions of the book that I am reading at the time!
Until next time…
