First Impression Friday | 07/09/18
If you’re not aware of what First Impression Friday is, it was created by Joe at JW Martin – Storeys of Stories where, every Friday, he talks about his first impressions of his current read. I actually think that I’m going to do this bi-weekly because, at the moment, I don’t think that I’m going to be reading books that quick due to university.
I also think that – where Joe has said that he will just come back to his FIF post and link his reviews – I’m going to come back to the post, and just write if I was wrong or right. So I have my predicted ratings, and then I’m going to write my actual rating and a couple of sentences on what I actually thought. But I will link my full review as well.
Ok, so I’m currently on the first few chapters of two books: Heart of Mist by Helen Scheuerer and Wicked Like a Wildfire by Lana Popović. I’m listening to Heart of Mist on audiobook and reading the physical copy of Wicked Like a Wildfire, and I’ve read about 30 pages of each book.
Heart of Mist by Helen Scheuerer (The Oremere Chronicles #1)
My first impressions of this are that it has a really fast-paced beginning. I can’t quite keep up with what is happening, so I hope that the rest of the book isn’t like this otherwise I’m not going to enjoy it. The narrator also seems alright, she doesn’t have an annoying voice which is always a positive when it comes to audiobooks. I can’t really comment on the characters because I’m about half an hour into the audiobook and not much has been revealed about them.
My predicted rating:
Actual rating:
Wicked Like a Wildfire by Lana Popović (Hibiscus Daughter #1)
Well, this is just the complete opposite to Reign of Mist! I’m on page 25 of this and the beginning IS SO SLOW! It’s just moving at such a glacial pace, and I don’t get the magic system AT. ALL. Yes, the magic has already been introduced, and Popović has tried to describe what the magic system is like, but I don’t get it… Is it just me being dumb? I’m hoping that we learn more about it, and I’m hoping that the story picks up a bit, because if this book is full of purple prose, I’m not going to enjoy it at all.
My predicted rating:
Actual rating:
They’re not exactly the best first impressions of the books, but I am hoping that they get better… Especially Heart of Mist because it sounds like the exact type of book that I love reading. As for Wicked Like a Wildfire, I’ve heard so many good things about this book, so I just want it to live up to the hype.
That’s it for my first ever First Impression Friday! I’ll be back in two weeks to share my first impressions of the book that I am reading at the time!
Until next time…
