Crown of Midnight by Sarah J. Maas
I didn’t think this series could get better but OH MY GOD! It did! It really really did. I didn’t think I could love/hate the characters any more but I did, I didn’t think that the plot could get more crazy, BUT IT DEFINITELY DID! If you can’t tell already, this is a 5 star book.
From the throne of glass rules a king with a fist of iron and a soul as black as pitch. Assassin Celaena Sardothien won a brutal contest to become his Champion. Yet Celaena is far from loyal to the crown. She hides her secret vigilantly; she knows that the man she serves is bent on evil.
Keeping up the deadly charade becomes increasingly difficult when Celaena realizes she is not the only one seeking justice. As she tries to untangle the mysteries buried deep within the glass castle, her closest relationships suffer. It seems no one is above questioning her allegiances—not the Crown Prince Dorian; not Chaol, the Captain of the Guard; not even her best friend, Nehemia, a foreign princess with a rebel heart.
Then one terrible night, the secrets they have all been keeping lead to an unspeakable tragedy. As Celaena’s world shatters, she will be forced to give up the very thing most precious to her and decide once and for all where her true loyalties lie… and whom she is ultimately willing to fight for.
I feel the opening paragraph is all you need from me for this review… I mean what else could I possibly say? Well… I’ll try and go into more depth for you.
After finishing Throne of Glass, I immediately started Crown of Midnight. I had to have more of these characters and their adventures. I had to learn more about the world. There is more action in this book, there are more plot twists, more excitement and more character development which is everything that a second book in a series should be and more. (But then this book also rips out my heart, throws it on the ground and then stomps the absolute shit out of it in the process). In my personal reading experience, I can never seem to find a second book that is as good as – or better – than the first, but Crown of Midnight does this! Hands down! i genuinely think that it may be even better than Throne of Glass.
One of the brilliant things about this book were the characters and the arcs that they went through. We see a lot more growth in Celaena and you kind of start to understand why she acts like she does, why she’s as guarded as she is… I loved seeing her development. I also loved how there was less of a love-triangle as well. I say less because there is still an underlying feeling of a love-triangle towards the last quarter of the novel. I loved the development that Dorian undertook! We learn so many amazing things about him that just make me love him so much and I can’t wait to learn more about his character’s developments in the next books.
“Let them tremble in fear at what they had awoken.”
― Sarah J. Maas, Crown of Midnight
With the character of Chaol, I’m not quite sure where I stand with him. I really liked him during the beginning of the book, but then when the book progressed, I just found him to be really whiny and annoying, so I hope he gets a personality change during Heir of Fire. And plus, I still don’t know who I ship… Dorian and Celaena were cute together but then so were Chaol and Celaena so I don’t know…
So we have amazing characters… Then we have the fantastic plot.
The main section of this plot is focused on finding out what mysteries lie within the castle and trying to uncover what is going on with the King. Whilst going on this journey, we go deeper into the castle’s underground tunnels and discover more weird things that Celaena can’t explain. We do see a little bit of Elena but all in all… She turns out to be pretty useless.
Overall, this was just a fantastic book that kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time. And even though I haven’t gone on to read Heir of Fire straight away, it is definitely a book that I plan on reading in the upcoming weeks as I can’t wait to find out more about Celaena’s past, and I’ve also heard that there might be new ship (?)
