Television shows at the moment seem to be all about the ‘epicness’. It’s a battle to see who can create the most disturbing, the most bloody or the most mouth-gaping of shows. Inspired by the 1973 film of the same name, the television adaptation of Westworld, fits into these categories. It’s disturbing, it’s bloody and it blew my mind.

Westworld isn’t your typical amusement park. Intended for rich vacationers, the futuristic park which is looked after by robotic “hosts” allows its visitors to live out their fantasies through artificial consciousness. No matter how illicit the fantasy may be, there are no consequences for the park’s guests, allowing for any wish to be indulged.

This brilliant tv show features an all-star cast including Sir Anthony Hopkins as the creator of this world, Ed Harris as a mysterious man who dresses all in black and Rachel Evan Wood plays a woman of innocence who’s character development is brilliant. Also to grace our screen is James Marsden, Thandie Newton, Luke Hemsworth and Ben Barnes. I bet you wanna see it now eh?

The season started off quite slow as it built the foundations of the park and of the characters; we’re given the impression that the ‘hosts’ are stupid, they’re robots who have no control over what they say or do. And then everything just hits the fan. The ‘hosts’ start acting out of their own accord, they start remembering their past lives, and no one seems to know why it’s happening. 

Throughout the show, we see the ‘hosts’ and ‘real-life people’ interacting with each other and it’s quite disturbing to see how the ‘real-life people’ don’t care that they are in a world full of robots whilst they are in the park; they don’t seem to care that the person who they are having sex with is a host. It just doesn’t matter to them. The hosts are toys that they can play with if they pay the right amount of money, but the hosts have had enough. They know what’s going on. And they want to get out.

Every part of this show is thrilling and in every episode, writer and director Jonathan Nolan constantly keeps us guessing as to what it going on, he constantly lifts up another curtain to reveal another surprise that leaves us shaken to the core.

Westworld is a brilliant television show. If you’re looking for a sci-fi, thriller with a hint of western, then this is the show for you. I’d watch it now…
