My 2021 Reading Goals

My 2021 Reading Goals

2021… Mom always tells me not to wish my life away, but when it comes to this year, I want it to be over. It’s not just the pandemic that has made this year miserable, and I know that the whole situation is going to be over as soon as Big Ben chimes saying it’s 1st January. But, I just want this year done. It’s not been great.

It hasn’t been good when it comes to reading or blogging either. I never really try to set myself personal or book goals when it comes to the new year, because I know myself, and I know full-well that I won’t stick to them.

But I’ve decided to switch things up this year and set myself some goals. So, here they are!

 1. I want to read more graphic novels

I love graphic novels. I love the stories they tell, I love the artwork… They’re just *chefs kiss*. A couple of the ones shown are ones that I need to buy like The 7 Deadly Sins, and From Hell. But with Lady Killer, an Ms. Marvel, I own quite a few in the series, I just need to start them!

 2. I want to read more manga

I have A HUGE AMOUNT of manga that I need to read. I own and have read most mangas in the series shown here, but I just need to catch up and finish them, because there are just so many! Dr. Stone is one that I’ve come across recently, and instantly fell in love with. The anime is fantastic as well.

 3. I want to try and read new releases when they come out

This is a long shot, to be honest. It’s very rare that I read new releases when they come out because I’m still buried under books that I needed to read about 5 years ago. But, I’m going to try my best. Especially when it comes to the books that I’m most anticipating! Winterkeep comes out in January, and luckily, I have an ARC, so I can get round to that in the next week!

4. I want to try and read 50 books

Again, this is another long shot. It depends a lot on what kind of year I’m having. This year has been difficult when it comes to my mental health so trying to read 50 books has been hard. At the time of writing, I’ve read 40 books, so I’ve got to read 10 more in 13 days! I’m hoping that 50 books is something that I’ll be able to achieve in 2021. In 2017, I managed to read 119 books, and then in 2018, I read 87 or something like that, which I think is just… mind-blowing. HOW?! HOW DID I DO IT?! I will never know.

5. I want to try and try different genres

I mainly read YA fantasy, and contemporary. I definitely want to branch out and read more adult fiction, adult fantasy, or historical fiction. The Alienist is a book that I’m very interested in. I’ve seen the TV series on Netflix, and I really enjoyed it. It’s historical fiction, but it also deals with murders, and psychology which are things that I enjoy (that sounds weird, but you get my point). I’m hoping that adding crime and psychology to a genre that I normally have no interest in reading, will make me learn to enjoy the genre more. I also want to read more art books such as Twisted Visions, which shows loads of Junji Ito who does some amazing work for manga.

I’ve kept the number of goals to a minimum because I know that I’d end up getting overwhelmed, and not keep to any of them. Let’s hope that I can actually stick to some of these because all of these books sound amazing!

  1. I’ve not planned on having any 2021 goals apart from a reading challenge of 40 books, but I’ve got it in my mind that I ought to try reading new releases fairly quickly after receiving them. Like you, I’m drowning under books from a few years ago that I haven’t got round to reading yet.
