Fairy Loot Unboxing | June 2020

Fairy Loot Unboxing | June 2020

Welcome back to ANOTHER Fairy Loot unboxing! So, for this month the theme was ‘A Different Kind of Magic’ and when the theme was announced last month, I knew exactly what the book was. Due to everything that’s going on in the world right now, the Fairy Loot subscription boxes were delayed in shipping which is completely understandable.

Let’s get on with the unboxing…

Another Fairy Loot box means another month of gorgeous artwork which is designed by Taratjah! The artwork for this month is absolutely amazing and sums up the book and theme perfectly. On the back of this card is all of the information about each item, but I never look at this as it contains spoilers as to what is in the box, and I WANT TO BE SURPRISED!

This Alice in Wonderland tea strainer was the first item that I saw in the box, and this was brought to us exclusively by Fairy Loot!

If there is one thing that I can’t get enough of… It’s socks… I do love them. So, when I saw socks in this box that were inspired by one of my favourite series of all time: The Bone Season, I instantly fell in love. These were also brought to use by the Fairy Loot team!

Like socks, coasters are something else that I can’t get enough of. I love all the types of designs that you can get, and I love them, even more, when they’re inspired by Avatar: The Last Airbender. Seriously, if any of you haven’t seen watched this series yet, you’re missing out, and need to watch it as soon as you can! The coasters were designed by @noverantale!

Last month, Fairy Loot announced that they were actually including TWO books in their box, rather than the usual one. The Gilded Ones by Namina Forna is the first book that was included in this months box. It’s a YA fantasy that’s inspired by West-Africa, and it isn’t out until February 2021!

Sixteen-year-old Deka lives in fear and anticipation of the blood ceremony that will determine whether she will become a member of her village. Already different from everyone else because of her unnatural intuition, Deka prays for red blood so she can finally feel like she belongs.

But on the day of the ceremony, her blood runs gold, the color of impurity–and Deka knows she will face a consequence worse than death.

Then a mysterious woman comes to her with a choice: stay in the village and submit to her fate, or leave to fight for the emperor in an army of girls just like her. They are called alaki–near-immortals with rare gifts. And they are the only ones who can stop the empire’s greatest threat.

Knowing the dangers that lie ahead yet yearning for acceptance, Deka decides to leave the only life she’s ever known. But as she journeys to the capital to train for the biggest battle of her life, she will discover that the great walled city holds many surprises. Nothing and no one are quite what they seem to be–not even Deka herself.

This patch is inspired by The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern and was designed by @dustandpages. One of these days, I’m going to buy an old, baggy denim jacket, and then sew on all of the patched that I’ve received from book boxes, and I’m going to have the most bookish jacket ever!

@Jezhawk is an amazing designer, and I love their work so so much. I also love The Shadows Between Us by Tricia Levenseller. So when those two things come together and make this gorgeous enamel pin, I couldn’t be happier.

AAANNNNNNDDDDD… the book of the month is Forest of Souls by Lori M. Lee. The Fairy Loot edition has an exclusive cover, it has artwork on the reverse of the dust jacket by @arz28, and is also signed by the author. As usual, there is a letter from the author which has character artwork on the back. This months character artwork is also by @arz28.

Sirscha Ashwyn comes from nothing, but she’s intent on becoming something. After years of training to become the queen’s next royal spy, her plans are derailed when shamans attack and kill her best friend Saengo.

And then Sirscha, somehow, restores Saengo to life.

Unveiled as the first soulguide in living memory, Sirscha is summoned to the domain of the Spider King. For centuries, he has used his influence over the Dead Wood—an ancient forest possessed by souls—to enforce peace between the kingdoms. Now, with the trees growing wild and untamed, only a soulguide can restrain them. As war looms, Sirscha must master her newly awakened abilities before the trees shatter the brittle peace, or worse, claim Saengo, the friend she would die for.

As always, Fairy Loot included the Fairyscoop newsletter which includes an interview with the author and also the information for next months box (which sounds A-MAZ-ING!), and then they also include a bookmark that has the artwork of the month printed on the front and then ‘Fairy Loot / June 2020 / ‘A Different Kind of Magic’ printed on the back!
