WWW Wednesday is hosted by Sam on Taking on a World of Words. Anyone can participate by answering the three questions below and then posting a link to your post from your blog on Sam’s website, or just answer the questions on her post if you do not have a blog.
The three questions (Ws) are:
1.) What are you currently reading?
2.) What did you recently finish reading?
3.) What do you think you’ll read next?
So without any further ado, let’s get on with it, shall we?
I’m actually reading three books at the moment because I’m an absolute idiot who does these stupid things to herself. I’m reading Beneath the Citadel by Destiny Soria (which I was reading last week), I’m listening to Hero at the Fall by Alwyn Hamilton on audiobook, and then I’m reading A Canticle for Leibowitz for university!
Title: Beneath the Citadel
Author: Destiny Soria
Publication Date: 9th October 2018
Publisher: Abrams Books
Pages: 480
Genre: YA Fantasy
Series: N/A
Yes, I know… I’ve been reading this for two weeks now, but I always seem to read books slower when I’m reading them on my phone because I always end up getting distracted by Twitter or something. And reading books on a screen isn’t really my preferred option… I much prefer physical books or audiobooks. At the moment, I’m 18% of the way through Beneath the Citadel and I’m actually really enjoying it! There’s a hint that there may be a gay romance to come, but I don’t know whether that’s just me hoping for one (?) I still stand with what I said in last weeks WWW Wednesday post though: I just feel like the protagonists are too young for me to really connect with, but we’ll see!
In the city of Eldra, people are ruled by ancient prophecies. For centuries, the high council has stayed in power by virtue of the prophecies of the elder seers. After the last infallible prophecy came to pass, growing unrest led to murders and an eventual rebellion that raged for more than a decade.
In the present day, Cassa, the orphaned daughter of rebels, is determined to fight back against the high council, which governs Eldra from behind the walls of the citadel. Her only allies are no-nonsense Alys, easygoing Evander, and perpetually underestimated Newt, and Cassa struggles to come to terms with the legacy of rebellion her dead parents have left her — and the fear that she may be inadequate to shoulder the burden. But by the time Cassa and her friends uncover the mystery of the final infallible prophecy, it may be too late to save the city — or themselves.

Title: Hero at the Fall
Author: Alwyn Hamilton
Publication Date: 1st February 2018
Publisher: Faber & Faber
Pages: 528
Genre: YA Fantasy
Series: Rebel of the Sands #3
I think that I’m about 12% of the way through this audiobook and I’m loving being back in this world (not so much love the fact that this is the last book). The narrator does an amazing job of voicing all of the characters and making me feel like I’m in the rebel group with Amani. At this moment in time, nothing major has happened, but I feel like the story is just building up slowly towards a big battle or something and I CAN’T WAIT!
When gunslinging Amani Al’Hiza escaped her dead-end town, she never imagined she’d join a revolution, let alone lead one. But after the bloodthirsty Sultan of Miraji imprisoned the Rebel Prince Ahmed in the mythical city of Eremot, she doesn’t have a choice. Armed with only her revolver, her wits, and her untameable Demdji powers, Amani must rally her skeleton crew of rebels for a rescue mission through the unforgiving desert to a place that, according to maps, doesn’t exist. As she watches those she loves most lay their lives on the line against ghouls and enemy soldiers, Amani questions whether she can be the leader they need or if she is leading them all to their deaths.

Title: A Canticle for Leibowitz
Author: Walter M. Miller. Jr.
Publication Date: 4th September 1997
Publisher: Orbit
Pages: 368
Genre: Science Fiction, Post-Apocalyptic, Dystopian
Series: St. Leibowitz #1
I’m only 32 pages into this… It’s a very slow going process because there are a lot of words (mainly religious words) that I don’t know what they mean, so this means that I have to look up the definition, and then write the definition on a sticky tab and then stick it by the word. Then, once I’ve finished a chapter, I’ll write a summary of the chapter down and then stick that at the beginning of the chapter. This is because I’m studying this for my science fiction university course, so I know it will be helpful in the future to have the words I don’t understand tabbed and defined and also the chapters summarised.
So far, the book is quite intriguing. Nothing much has happened though… Brother Francis has found a big hole in the ground and he’s gone down it. That’s it. That’s what happened in the first chapter. We’ll see if it gets any better! I hope so though because I hate reading boring books for uni.
In a nightmarish ruined world slowly awakening to the light after sleeping in darkness, the infant rediscoveries of science are secretly nourished by cloistered monks dedicated to the study and preservation of the relics and writings of the blessed Saint Isaac Leibowitz. From here the story spans centuries of ignorance, violence, and barbarism, viewing through a sharp, satirical eye the relentless progression of a human race damned by its inherent humanness to recelebrate its grand foibles and repeat its grievous mistakes.

Title: Escaping from Houdini (Paperback)
Author: Kerri Maniscalco
Publication Date: 11th October 2018
Publisher: Jimmy Patterson Books
Pages: 416
Genre: YA Historical Fiction
Series: Stalking Jack the Ripper #3
This book is just… Wow… I mean, I had really high expectations anyway because I LOVE Maniscalco’s previous two books in this series, but I really liked Escaping from Houdini. Part of me wants to say that it wasn’t as good as the other two because I didn’t really like Audrey Rose’s character development, but that’s something that I’ll have to think properly about when I write my review!
Audrey Rose Wadsworth and her partner-in-crime-investigation, Thomas Cresswell, are en route to New York to help solve another blood-soaked mystery. Embarking on a week-long voyage across the Atlantic on the opulent RMS Etruria, they’re delighted to discover travelling troupe of circus performers, fortune tellers, and a certain charismatic young escape artist entertaining the first-class passengers nightly.
But then, privileged young women begin to go missing without explanation, and a series of brutal slayings shocks the entire ship. The strange and disturbing influence of the Moonlight Carnival pervades the decks as the murders grow ever more freakish, with nowhere to escape except the unforgiving sea. It’s up to Audrey Rose and Thomas to piece together the gruesome investigation as even more passengers die before reaching their destination. But with clues to the next victim pointing to someone she loves, can Audrey Rose unravel the mystery before the killer’s horrifying finale?

Title: Shatter Me
Author: Tahereh Mafi
Publication Date: 10th February 2012
Publisher: Electric Monkey
Pages: 336
Genre: YA Fantasy
Series: Shatter Me #1
I have to read this book for the monthly Waterstones book club which is on 2nd October… So I think as soon as I have finished one of the books that I’m currently reading, I’ll get straight onto this one. I definitely want to finish this for the book club meeting, because I didn’t manage to finish Wicked Like a Wildfire for this months and it made me so sad, because the people that HAD finished the book were talking about it, and I couldn’t join in. So I’definitelyly going to read this! Plus, it will take a book off of my TBR-veteran pile.
I have a curse
I have a gift
I am a monster
I’m more than human
My touch is lethal
My touch is power
I am their weapon
I will fight backJuliette hasn’t touched anyone in exactly 264 days.
The last time she did, it was an accident, but The Reestablishment locked her up for murder. No one knows why Juliette’s touch is fatal. As long as she doesn’t hurt anyone else, no one really cares. The world is too busy crumbling to pieces to pay attention to a 17-year-old girl. Diseases are destroying the population, food is hard to find, birds don’t fly anymore, and the clouds are the wrong color.
The Reestablishment said their way was the only way to fix things, so they threw Juliette in a cell. Now so many people are dead that the survivors are whispering war – and The Reestablishment has changed its mind. Maybe Juliette is more than a tortured soul stuffed into a poisonous body. Maybe she’s exactly what they need right now.
Juliette has to make a choice: Be a weapon. Or be a warrior.

It’s nice to keep you guys updated on what I’m reading, and even though I do an end-of-the-month wrap-up, you never get to see what I’m reading during the week.
Until next time…

Ugh, I’m in the middle of too many books right now too! In my defense, higher priority reads finally came off hold from my library so I started listening to those instead of ones I’d already started. It’s a struggle.
Here’s my post: https://litlistening.com/2018/09/26/www-wednesday-weekly-wrap-up-2/
